Accutane (isotretinoin) is used for the severe cases of nodular acne when other methods of treatment proved inefficient. Accutane has been reported to cause life-threatening birth defects in babies whose mothers took this medicine. This medicine is available under a special program called iPLEDGE – every patient is required to sign an agreement and undertake certain obligations. These obligations include using two different methods of birth control, visiting your doctor for examination and following all the directions of your health care provider.
You will need to combine one primary and one secondary method of birth control. Primary methods include vasectomy, tubal ligation or intrauterine device, estrogen containing hormonal patches, implants, vaginal rings, while the most common secondary methods are condoms, cervical cap along with spermicidal foam or gel, vaginal sponge with spermicide, or a diaphragm. Taking St. John’s wort is not recommended as this herbal supplement can cause breakthrough bleeding if used along with any methods of hormonal birth control. If you are taking steroids, tetracycline antibiotics, or seizure medication tell your doctor about it as your dose may need to be adjusted, or you will not be able to take this medicine.
